What is an Analog Voltmeter?

An analog voltmeter is a measuring instrument that indicates voltage using a pointer moving across a calibrated scale. Inside the meter, a mechanism—often a D’Arsonval galvanometer—converts electrical current into mechanical movement. When current flows through the meter, an electromagnetic force is generated, causing the pointer to deflect. The angle of deflection is proportional to the applied voltage. The more voltage there is, the farther the pointer moves. Because it uses a moving pointer, it’s easy to see how the voltage changes in real time.

Here is a step-by-step guide of using an analog voltmeter:

1. Check the Range and Polarity
First, look at the range selection switch on the dial and make sure we’ve chosen the right voltage range (for example, 20 V or 200 V).

When using an analog voltmeter, you also need to pay attention to polarity. For DC measurements, connect the red probe to the positive side (+) (higher potential) and the black probe to the negative side (-) (lower potential). If the probes are connected incorrectly, the pointer will deflect in the opposite direction and may cause damage to the meter.

2.Connection and Measurement
After connecting the probes to the circuit we want to test, observe how the pointer moves on the dial. To read an analog voltmeter, we need to look at where the needle points on the scale and estimate between the markings to get a more accurate value. Unlike digital meters that show the number directly, reading an analog meter usually requires a bit more judgment and experience.

3. Analyzing the Results
Since an analog voltmeter shows voltage with a mechanical pointer, it can clearly reflect instantaneous voltage changes, like fluctuations or pulses. This makes it very useful when we want to observe how the voltage in a circuit changes over time, which digital meters usually can’t show as clearly.

Once switching on the circuit and the pointer becomes steady, we can start taking the reading.

  1. Check the Range and Zero Position

Before reading the value, make sure the pointer is at the zero mark on the dial. If it deviate from zero, use the small zero-adjust screw on the side of the meter (usually marked Z or ZERO) to bring it back to 0. Otherwise, Otherwise, a systematic error will occur in the measurement.

  1. Read the Needle Position

Look at where the pointer is pointing on the scale and record the value. Since the needle often falls between two marks, we usually need to estimate the value.

Method 1: Linear Estimation

If the pointer is between 7 and 8 and closer to 7, the reading might be about 7.2 or 7.3. A common approach is to estimate how far the needle is from the lower number. For example, if it’s about one-third of the way from 7 to 8, the reading would be roughly 7 + 1/3.

Method 2: Rounding Down

If we want a conservative estimate, or if the needle sits exactly between two numbers (like 7.5), you can record the lower number (7). However, this method may make the reading slightly lower than the actual value.

  1. Convert According to the Selected Range

Analog meters usually have several ranges (like 10 V, 50 V, or 250 V). The scale printed on the dial is often fixed (for example 0–250), and the pointer position is proportional to the selected range. After obtaining the pointer value, it must be converted according to the currently selected range.

*Procedure: Read the value indicated on the scale (for example, 7.5), then multiply it by the ratio between the selected range and the full-scale value of the dial.

*Example: If the dial scale is 0–250 and the pointer indicates 7, selecting the 250 V range results in a reading of
(7/250)×250=7 V(7/250) × 250 = 7\,V(7/250)×250=7V.
If the 10 V range is used, the reading becomes
(7/250)×10=0.28 V(7/250) × 10 = 0.28\,V(7/250)×10=0.28V.

In most cases, traditional AC voltmeters—especially rectifier-type analog voltimeter—can’t be used to measure DC voltage. However, some special AC voltmeters, such as electrodynamometer meters or moving-iron meters, can measure DC voltage, and the reading will match the actual DC value.

These two types of voltmeters are quite different in how they work and how they display readings:

  1. Display Method:
    Analog voltmeters use a mechanical pointer and scale, which makes it easy to see trends and fluctuations in voltage. Digital voltmeters just show the number on a screen.
  2. Accuracy
    Analog voltmeters can have parallax errors when you read the pointer, and the resolution is lower at higher ranges. Digital volttmeters are usually more accurate, with smaller errors, and the numbers are easy to read.

Frequency Response: Traditional analog AC voltmeters (rectifier type) can measure only the RMS value of sinusoidal signals and are sensitive to waveform distortion. Digital voltmeters, particularly digital multimeters, typically have a wider frequency response and can measure non-sinusoidal signals more accurately.

These two types of voltmeters are quite different in how they work and how they display readings:

  1. Display Method:
